What does reading that create for you?

What does your brain offer you?

Perhaps, regardless of what's happened this year, you look forward to the possibilities you could create in 49 days. 

That's me and that's what we'll be focused on for Group Coaching Call #1 this week.

Feelings Focus:

This week we're diving deeper into the feeling of 'Overwhelm'.

The purpose of this weekly feeling focus is to build our vocabulary for emotions, build awareness and confidence in feeling our feelings. 

I choose the weekly feeling randomly. If you'd like me to dive deep on a particular feeling let me know and we'll do it. 

I use Brene Brown's 'Atlas of the Heart' book along with resources mentioned each week. 

Overwhelm...

To look at overwhelm I feel like we need to take a quick look at stressed too as they seem to be locations on the same spectrum. 

"Stressed : we feel stressed when we evaluate emotional demand beyond our ability to cope successfully. This includes elements of unpredictability, uncontrollability, and feeling overloaded. 
Stressful situations cause both physiological (body) and psychological (mind and emotion) reactions. 

Overwhelm: Means an extreme level of stress, and emotional and/or cognitive intensity to the point of feeling unable to function. 

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary definition of overwhelm is: "completely overcome or overpowered by thought or feeling". "

 

When I think of those definitions of overwhelm, I think how I've misused the term on occasion. It also highlights to me how little I've been aware of and known the real meaning of the emotions. 

 

"We all know the feeling that washes over us and leaves us completely unsure of what to do next. Even when people ask "How can I help?" or "What needs to be done?" - responding with organised thoughts feels impossible.

Feeling stressed and feeling overwhelmed seem to be related to our perception of how we are coping with our current situation and our ability to handle the accompanying emotions: Am I coping? Can I handle this? Am I inching toward the quicksand?.

Jon Kabat-Zinn describes overwhelm as the all-too-common feeling "that our lives are somehow unfolding faster than the human nervous system and psyche are able to manage well".

He suggests mindful play or no-agenda non-doing time is the cure for overwhelm."

If you think about the last time you felt overwhelm, what was your natural response? 

For me it's to do more. If I feel overwhelmed I tend to feel driven to set a plan and tick lot's off. Which is contradictory to what Jon Kabat-Zinn has prescribed. 

 

"There is a body of research that indicates that we don't process other emotional information accurately when we feel overwhelmed, and this can result in poor decision making. 

Researcher Carol Gohm used the term "overwhelmed" to describe an experience where our emotions are intense, our focus on them is moderate, and our clarity about exactly what we're feeling is low enough that we get confused when trying to identify or describe the emotions. 

In other words: On a scale of 1-10, I'm feeling my emotions at about 10, I'm paying attention to them at about 5, and I understand them at about 2. 

This is not a setup for successful decision making. The big learning here is that feeling both stressed and overwhelmed is about our narrative of emotional and mental depletion - there's just too much going on to manage effectively."

 

Wowee. I think just reading that helps me gift myself so much more grace and kindness. Being aware of these definitions next time I'm in the depth of overwhelm will really help me move through it much quicker by taking time out to do nothing (and note, not to scroll mindlessly on my phone or watch tv but to actually do nothing) and create space for myself to move through it. Knowing my body, mind and emotions are all reacting and all need space will be really valuable.

Make yourself proud: You might feel in a rut not making any progress and you’re ready to step up and make yourself proud. Private coaching can help you set bigger goals that you are willing to strive for and can help keep you focused on getting there.
